Wool, virgin wool, or lambswool - what's the difference?

Wool is a natural and renewable raw material. This blanket is partly (one quarter) made from virgin wool from the Gotland sheep, which was shorn by Vikings who valued its high wool quality, and ¾ from lambswool. Lambswool refers to the wool from a sheep's (very) first shearing or a lamb's first shearing. It is particularly soft because the fibers are still very fine. Like virgin wool, it is typically obtained from live sheep, usually in spring, as much as possible in one piece. After shearing, the wool is combed and loosened before being dyed a beautiful sunny yellow and spun into yarn. From this wool, the Klippan Gotland blankets are then woven. Lambswool is said to be hardly scratchy, breathable, and to have excellent insulating properties. It warms in winter and cools in summer. Klippan does everything to ensure the blanket feels soft; for this, the lambswool is pre-combed once more. Nevertheless, this quality is naturally scratchier than a cotton blanket would be, and the blanket sheds a little, especially at the beginning.

The Gotland blanket can be wonderfully washed at 30 degrees, so you can easily wash your cozy blanket yourself when needed. To ensure your wool blanket lasts a long time, it's best to use a mild wool detergent and avoid fabric softener. Keep in mind that natural wool fat has a self-cleaning effect, and you wash it out little by little with each wash. It's best to hang the Gotland blanket outside on the line to air out.
