Mustard Linen Napkins by Linen Tales

The Mustard linen napkins by Linen Tales are a pair of mustard-yellow cloth napkins made from pure European linen, woven in Lithuania, and stone-washed. The mitered corners are crafted in the company’s own sewing workshop in Vilnius and ensure the edges remain straight for years.

Mustard linen napkins are a pair of cloth napkins by Linen Tales from Vilnius, each measuring 40 by 40 centimeters, tied together in a set of two with kitchen twine. Outdoors, they serve as weights under a glass, beneath a sliced melon, or draped over a loaf of bread in a basket.

Mustard yellow: earthy, muted, and made for summer

Mustard features a muted yellow with a high ochre content, reminiscent of sand in the late afternoon. On a weathered outdoor wooden table, the shade captures the light without being blinding, and it feels perfectly at home alongside olive wood, straw baskets, and roughly glazed stoneware. Paired with tomatoes, melon, and a light wine, it creates a table setting that evokes the south. This color handles bright sunshine better than any pale shade because it doesn't appear washed out in the light.

Dining on the terrace—and the breeze that comes with it

In midsummer, we dine outdoors, where a light paper napkin is blown into the garden bed by the first gust of wind. A piece of linen with a weight of 215 grams per square meter stays exactly where you put it, and even serves as a weight for the corner of the tablecloth. It catches peach juice, dries a condensation-covered glass, and eventually doubles as a mat for a cheese board. Anyone who eats outside regularly needs textile weight on their table instead of embossed paper.

Why the fabric doesn't get clammy in summer

Linen fibers are hollow on the inside, wicking away water rather than trapping it in the pile like terry cloth. This is why the napkin absorbs moisture from your hands or a glass on a warm evening and is dry again shortly after. The fabric remains smooth and cool against the skin because it doesn’t swell or become heavy. At Linen Tales, this weight is standard for their entire collection of solid-colored kitchen and table linens, from tea towels to runners.

A dimensionally stable fabric from stone washing

Freshly woven linen is stiff and resistant, which is why every length of fabric is first washed with stones. This mechanical process breaks down the fibers, making the fabric soft and completing most of the shrinkage. A napkin that has undergone this treatment retains its dimensions even after its thirtieth wash, ensuring that several napkins on the table remain the same size. It becomes softer on its own over time, with each subsequent wash.

Wash at 40 degrees, line dry

Place the linen napkins in the delicate cycle at a maximum of 40 degrees and limit the spin speed to 600 RPM. A mild detergent without bleach preserves the earthiness of the mustard yellow, as bleach is intended solely for white linens. In midsummer, linen dries on the line faster than the machine takes to complete a single cycle. Hang the napkins individually, and by evening, they will be smooth on the table without ever needing an iron.
